Volpelleres Centre is the main focus of public and private activity in this area of Sant Cugat, a prime location in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Located nearby a new intermodal hub, we understood the project as an opportunity to generate synergies among different parts of the program, which includes a municipal market, a mall, social housing, offices and an extensive underground parking, thus effectively becoming a node of centrality and urbanity for the whole neighborhood.
We have sought the maximum permeability of the building, which adapts to the very pronounced slopes of the site, opening up passages and entrances on different levels. All these levels correlate with a longitudinal interior axis which creates a visual continuum through the whole building, generating the impression of being in a traditional urban milieu. This axis is oriented towards the historic city center of Sant Cugat, very visible from the ensemble.
The organization of the program responds to the main parameters of the urban planning, using public space as the backbone structuring the whole sector. Commercial areas, placed on the lower levels, open towards the open public spaces, while flats and offices make up the visible volumes of the building, orientated according to the best solar exposure. Several sustainable strategies are effectively implemented, including a co-generating plant, making this building one of the most advanced residential developments in Spain.
