The New Euromarché is a complete renovation of the existing building, which was the first commercial center in Riyadh, built at the end of the 1970s. Our proposal is based on the crucial condition that commercial activity has to be uninterrupted during the construction period. The final volume of the ensemble is thus related to its construction phases and to the different functions it has to host.
We locate the 5-star hotel tower on the most visible vertex of the plot in order to take advantage of the long views over the city and to landmark it as the beacon that locates Euromarché in Riyadh’s skyline. The commercial base reaches to the limits of the triangular plot and is lit by very large patios organizing the interior distribution.
The commercial center also takes advantage of the European origin of Euromarché to generate an interior layout that recalls the shopping experience in European city-centers, distinguished by mixture of uses and where public space is used as a social activator. Our design implements several sustainable strategies focused to save water and energy, and generates a roof garden on the commercial center that can be used many months of the year as a public space, meant to become an attraction in Riyadh.
