The site of this public-funded housing is quite unique because it is placed along the main access avenue of this suburban extension of Montcada, a town within the metropolitan area of Barcelona, leading to the train station and opening onto a big central green park. Our proposal summarizes the various requests of the building regulations forming a compact U-shaped block, using the best possible orientation and opening the apartments to the most spacious areas of the plot.
Our intention was to solve simultaneously the need to minimize common spaces and the request of maximum sunlight exposure, thus generating a variety of unit types combining passing apartments with corner flats, so that all have an orientation to the morning sun. We achieve flexibility of the flats through the strategic situation of 2- and 3-bedroom units, which may vary according to changing requirements. This versatility is further enhanced by the construction system of the interior walls, based on a drywall mounting system.
The facades exposed to the sun are arranged with generous terraces within a strict system of horizontal stripes, while the North facades are treated with minimal openings within the same compositional layout, thus blurring the definition of a front-and-back scheme. The building program is completed with a ground floor occupied completely by a commercial center (composed by flexible small units with street façade and a large shopping center in the interior of the block) and a two-story parking for public and private use.
