Santa Coloma is a town of the metropolitan continuum of Barcelona. It grew exponentially in a very short time with the immigration wave of the 1960’s. Its present urban form dates from those days and is very compact and of poor quality. This is changing now very rapidly due to a collective effort to bring the city up-to-date. The project of the renewal of the City Hall, in the very center of the town, is an important part of this renovation program.
The project adds a large new program to the existing building, a reference landmark originated in the 1920s but mainly from the 1940s. The main intention of our design is to generate a unified coherent constructed body capable to create a new urban landscape while preserving the previous layers of the construction of the building. The outcome is a low profile volume very attentive to the difficult topographic and scale conditions, environmentally and urbanistically sound.
A new great courtyard is opened at the core of the ensemble, organizing all percourses. The old staircase opens to this central patio-entrance, reinforcing the binding between the old and the new. The continuity we look for at urban functional level we also reinforce at material level by means of continuity of forms and façade treatment between all the buildings. Thus the idea of the reverberating façade as a device that works not only as an efficient thermal cushion, but also helps integrating this big institutional building in its small-scale, domestic milieu.
