LOCATION DORNBIRN, AUSTRIA PROMOTOR WIRTSCHAFTSFÖRDERUNGSINSTITUT, STATE OF AUSTRIA AREA EXTENSION 8.129 M2; REHABILITATION 756M2; PARKING 5.176M2 BUDGET 7.212.000EUR YEARS 2002

The complexity and heterogeneity of the site reflects its chaotic process of growth. Despite the fact that it is located in the town center of Dornbirn, it is not capable of clearly establishing architecturally the civic and social representativeness that this institution plays in the city. The proposed extension, with the acquisition of the adjacent angle building of the Trapezhaus, is an excellent opportunity to reverse this situation, creating a long, new façade along the main street connecting with the station.

Our design creates a series of interrelated volumes in a unified scheme, giving response to the requirements of the brief. The unit of the ensemble is assured by the coherent and consistent material qualities of this scheme. As ever, we consider the continuity of urban space in a city like Dornbirn a critical issue. Given the large area called for in the brief, we configure the building in such a way that it creates two interconnected squares: the open and representative access piazza, and a second square of smaller scale as a natural outdoors extension of the cafeteria.
