The renovation of the Place de La République has been an excellent occasion to revitalize the old center of the town and enhance its centrality in the complex and extended urban fabric of Leucate. The space of the square is a very elongated rectangle which has as its main attribute a strong fault line along its whole length. Our design takes this feature as the generating element that allows for different activities – from the most intimate to the most public nature – to be held at the square assuring the improvement of the general uses and conditions.
The main concepts of the proposal are: to bring closer together the North and South levels of the square to reduce the topographic difference; to understand the square as a single spatial unity despite the fault line; and to allow for different uses and their compatibility. The element that recollects all these criteria and is able to structure the whole project is a giant molding that runs along the square resolving all topographic differences at a single stroke. It facilitates the active use of the piazza by means of its stepping form, creating terraces, benches, or stairs, thus giving unity to the place.
