This central plaza in Getxo is currently a traffic crossing, but can become a civic hub for the town. Our design takes this opportunity to generate new urban connections and relationships, using the huge mass of the multipurpose building to modulkate them. In order to keep the scale of the place, we locate most of the volume underground, generating a new grass-covered roofscape that can become a new public space with qualities differentiated from those of the street level.
A new urban screen is placed on-site as an information device that can be activated by mobile phones, thus becoming an interactive attraction that adds to the centrality of the plaza. Temporary uses of the place are further encouraged by the design of the pavement and the public lighting, which become a background against which the civic dynamism of Getxo is expressed by its changing condition throughout the year.
