ENRIC MASSIP-BOSCH LECTURE IN IAAC, 10.12.2019

Enric Massip-Bosch has held a lecture called «Forms of Immediacy» in the Urbanism chapter, in conjunction with Miquel Lacasta architect. With Vicente Guallart moderator, at the IAAC main hall.

FORMS OF IMMEDIACY

Architecture is commonly seen as an interface between the world and the human being. A sort of mediator between a hostile exterior and a precarious me. Architecture, so the story goes, makes the world inhabitable. It is our buffer, so intimately ingrained in our everyday life that it is an extension of ourselves.

Or is it? What if these assumptions were wrong and architecture is not a buffer but a straitjacket, not comforting our senses but dulling them? A limitation that hampers our understanding of reality? What if architecture doesn’t help us see but impedes us to see?

Architectural responses to this condition of being a mediator have been complicated at best, and usually rhetorical. It has favored narratives to supportarchitectural choices, and they have inevitably derived towards fallacies -conceptual crutches to uphold a cultural fabrication, bringing us further apart from architectural experience.

Forms of Immediacy explores the possibility of an architecture born directly from its conditions, technical or topological to out it briefly, generating emotion without the layering of convoluted arguments, using EMBA’s work in the last ten years as a paradigm.
